Wellbeing

"The traditional pursuit of economic growth – singularly focused on financial profits over the wellbeing of people and planet – is a model that no longer serves us."

Wellbeing is a leading theme in the president Halla Tómasdóttir’s dialogue at home and aboad. It reflects a broader understanding of progress — one that moves beyond traditional economic indicators, such as GDP, to encompass health, equity, education, culture, social trust and sustainable stewardship of natural resources. Wellbeing concerns the quality of life of present and future generations alike.
In discussions about the future of our economies and societies, increasing attention is being given to redefining success in ways that prioritise human and environmental wellbeing. The president has emphasised the importance of long-term thinking in policymaking and of ensuring that economic systems serve the people and operate within environmental limits.
The president is the Patron of the Wellbeing Economy Forum, a global platform for dialogue and collaboration among politicians, policymakers, business leaders, academics and practitioners. Organised by the Icelandic Directorate of Health, the Forum is a part of the Joint Action PreventNCD. The next Forum will be held in Reykjavík in April 2026 and will centre on the theme The Power of Wellbeing: Redefining Success. Through her patronage, Halla Tómasdóttir seeks to encourage inclusive dialogue and cross-sector cooperation aimed at fostering sustainable wellbeing for all.
