A group of international leaders took part in a dialogue at Höfði yesterday afternoon. The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, convened the dialogue to mark 40 years since U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met there to discuss disarmament and peace. Yesterday’s dialogue among the leaders once again focused on peace and disarmament, as well as ways to mitigate the threats posed by the rapid development of artificial intelligence and declining respect for international law and international institutions. A call for responsible leadership was also formulated at Höfði.
The host at Höfði was the Mayor of Reykjavk Hildur Björnsdóttir. In addition to the President of Iceland and the Mayor, the participants in the discussion were Nataša Pirc Musar, President of Slovenia; Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs; U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski; Christiane Amanpour, CNN's Chief International Anchor; Ester Baiget, CEO of Novonesis; Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology; Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, environmental activist; Pat Mitchell, founder of TEDWomen; Jean Oelwang, co-founder of Virgin Unite; Charles Oppenheimer, director of The Oppenheimer Project; Aza Raskin, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology; and Leah Seligmann, CEO of The B-Team.
The group’s discussion began at 4:00 p.m. and lasted just over two hours. They discussed how today’s leaders could contribute to peace, greater trust, and the more responsible development of artificial intelligence. Following the discussion, the President of Iceland, the President of Slovenia, and the former President of Ireland signed the Call from Reykjavík.
