Letter of Credence
January 8, 2025
New ambassador of Japan.

The President received Japan’s new ambassador, Keizo Takewaka, who presented his Letter of Credence at Bessastaðir. They discussed the strong relations between Iceland and Japan and ways to further strengthen them in the fields of trade and culture. In that context, they talked, among other things, about Icelandic literature that has been translated into Japanese and about the film Touch, which is based on the novel of the same name by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson, where the setting of the story is both in Iceland and Japan.
Iceland’s policy on equality issues was discussed, as well as the state of education in the two countries. The upcoming World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, was also a topic of discussion. The Nordic countries will share a joint Nordic pavilion there, intended to strengthen ties with Japan and Japanese companies. On this occasion, the President will travel to Osaka for the World Expo in May with an Icelandic delegation and take part in an extensive program.
