The President received Piiu Mathiesen, the new Ambassador of Estonia to Iceland, based in Norway, who presented her Letter of Credence at Bessastaðir. They discussed the long history of relations between the two countries, including Iceland’s strong support for the restoration of Estonia’s independence. They also talked about ways to further strengthen cooperation between the countries, for example in the field of green solutions in the energy transition, innovation in the technology sector and other areas of business, as a number of Icelandic companies have operations in Estonia. Security and defense issues in international affairs were also discussed, including digital security, in which Estonia has been a frontrunner. Around 320 Estonian citizens reside in Iceland.
