The president opened the conference “Where experience gets a voice,” organized by the association Einstök börn (Special Children) at Hilton Reykjavík Nordica. The association supports children and young people with rare diseases or rare syndromes and their families. Among those who spoke at the conference were Dr. Albert Freedman, Eva Guðrún Sveinsdóttir, Hafdís Ragnarsdóttir and Ásdís Sigurjónsdóttir.
In her opening address, the president emphasized that the strength of communities could be measured by how they attend to people with variable needs. She added: “Every child is unique. Each child has their own strengths, dreams and possibilities, and every child has the right to flourish on their own terms – not least so‑called ‘special children’. The diversity of children, just like that of adults, is not a deviation from the norm but a natural part of human life. It is society’s role to create spaces where this diversity can truly thrive.”
