The President delivered an address at the opening of Iceland’s Agricultural Congress, held at Hotel Natura in Reykjavík. Other speakers included Trausti Hjálmarsson, Chair of the Icelandic Farmers’ Association, and Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, Minister of Industries. Herdís Magna Gunnarsdóttir, Vice-Chair of the Icelandic Farmers’ Association, also spoke presenting a talk titled “Women Shaping the Future of Agriculture”.
In her address, the President emphasised that domestic food production plays a vital role in safeguarding Iceland’s independence and security in an increasingly uncertain world. She encouraged a thoughtful and open dialogue on the future of Iceland’s relationship with the European Union. She also highlighted the many opportunities for innovation within Icelandic agriculture.
“Iceland’s abundant food pantry is truly manifold. It contains not only high-quality agricultural goods but also rich resources from the sea. Together, these diverse products from both land and ocean create significant opportunities for innovation and increased prosperity for all. But Iceland’s pantry holds more than a collection of excellent produce. It also represents environmental responsibility, knowledge and a forward-looking vision. How we nurture and develop our agricultural and marine resources today will shape the future of our society, our economy, and our food culture.”
