The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, yesterday addressed the AI for Good Global Summit, which is taking place in Switzerland. Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in cooperation with the United Nations (UN), the summit began on Tuesday and is part of Geneva Digital Week. The President also attended yesterday the first meeting of AI for Good Global Commission, on which she serves as a member.
The commission, convened by the ITU and the UN, is made up of individuals from different fields and with diverse backgrounds. The group includes national leaders, ministers, politicians, and representatives from the business community, international organizations, and civil society. The council is led by Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, and Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the ITU. Others serving on the commision include Alar Karis, President of Estonia, Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, Julie Sweet, CEO of Accenture, musician William Adams (will.i.am), Josephine Teo, Minister for Digital Development and Information of Singapore, and Emma Theofelus, Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology of Namibia. The commision’s task is to address technical, social, and economic issues related to artificial intelligence and to make policy recommendations in this field.
In her address to the AI for Good Global Summit, the President emphasized that many stakeholders must join forces to shape the framework for the technological advances that are transforming people’s lives and the development of societies. She added that it is crucial for young people to be involved in policymaking in this field as well. “No single country can govern this technology alone. No company can earn trust alone. No generation should be asked to live with decisions it has had no part in shaping.”
