The President celebrates 80 years of geothermal history at a ceremonial event at Hellisheiði.
Halla Tómasdóttir, the President of Iceland, delivered an address at the anniversary celebration of Jarðboranir and the Flói and Skeiða Cultivation Association at the Hellisheiði Power Plant, marking the 80-year drilling history of the companies. In her speech, the President emphasized the importance of geothermal energy in the development of Icelandic society and called for continued responsibility and foresight in energy matters.
The President recalled how the history of energy production in Iceland is not only a story of technology and construction, but also a story of courage and faith in a better society. She said that this development had carried the nation from poverty to prosperity and created the foundation for the standard of living that Icelanders enjoy today.
The President emphasized that Iceland’s success in harnessing geothermal energy is unique on a global scale. She reminded everyone, however, that behind the technology there are always people – individuals who dared to “drill deeper and think further” to lay the foundation for the achievements the nation enjoys today.
At the end of her address, the President emphasized her vision for the future. She said that energy issues would become increasingly important on the international stage, both in terms of economies, security, and climate. Iceland, she noted, has an important role to play as a model for sustainable energy use.
To conclude, the President recognised the employees, management teams, and partners whose efforts have driven the companies’ success over the years, and extended her congratulations on reaching this significant milestone.
