The president attends the Pope Francis funeral.




The President attended the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, served as Pope from 2013 and was also Head of State of the Vatican, the smallest independent country in the world.
The funeral took place in St. Peter’s Square and was attended by more than 250,000 people, including numerous Heads of State and dignitaries from around the world. Accompanying the President to Rome were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, and Einar Gunnarsson, Iceland’s Ambassador to Geneva and the Holy See.
The President had previously conveyed a message of condolence on behalf of the Icelandic nation. In the letter, she noted that Pope Francis would be remembered for his strong sense of justice and his lifelong service to humanity.
