The President meets with Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, at Bessastaðir. Zelensky is in the country on the occasion of the Session of the Nordic Council, which is being held in Reykjavík from 28–31 October. The theme of this year’s session is “Peace and Security in the Arctic” and the President of Ukraine is the guest of honor and will address the session later today.
The Nordic countries along with other allied and partner nations have supported Ukraine ever since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
At the presidents’ private meeting, which was their first, the presidents spoke on a personal note, among other things about their children. They also discussed the situation in Ukraine, its impact, and the well-being of ordinary citizens in the country. They talked about the responsibility of those currently in power to ensure lasting peace for the inhabitants. They then discussed the upcoming elections in the United States, developments in the Middle East and in the international community, and the close relationship between Ukraine and the Nordic countries. The president reiterated Iceland’s support for Ukraine and the importance of freedom, independence, and respect for international law.
