The President delivers a speech at Reykjavík Pride 2024. The slogan of Reykjavík Pride is “Pride is Strength,” and in the speech the President said she was rarely prouder of the Icelandic nation than when the opportunity arises to tell the story of queer people beyond the country’s borders.
“The state of world affairs is complicated. Human rights are under threat. We need people of courage and tireless fighters. And it is my sincere belief that in this struggle we must adopt the methods of the queer rights movement in Iceland: to choose gentleness in a harsh world, to celebrate what is different between us,” the President said, among other things, in the ceremonial address, which can be read in full here.
This is the second time that a President of Iceland addresses the Pride Parade in Reykjavík. The first was during Reykjavík Pride in 2016, which was the first time in the world that a head of state officially took part in an LGBTQ+ festival.
