The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, yesterday addressed Global Dialogue on AI Governance taking place in Switzerland. The event, organized by the United Nations (UN), began on Monday and is part of the Geneva Digital Week. Among others who spoke there were António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, and Alar Karis, President of Estonia.
In her address, President Tómasdóttir emphasized that artificial intelligence brings both opportunities and risks. “Artificial intelligence is one of the most consequential forces shaping our time. It can improve health, education, food security, disaster preparedness, scientific discovery and our response to environmental challenges. But its impact will not be determined by technological capacity alone. It will be determined by the human choices we make about power, access, accountability and, ultimately, the kind of society – and humanity – we choose to be,” the President said.
Later today, the President will address the AI for Good Global Summit, which is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in cooperation with the UN. At the summit, members of AI for Good Global Commission, which the UN is forming, will meet for the first time. President Tómasdóttir has accepted an invitation to sit on the commission, whose founding members also include Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, Alar Karis, President of Estonia, and leaders from business, international organizations and the scientific community.
