Flag and shield
The presidency has its own flag, which is raised at the presidential residence at Bessastaðir and on the president’s vehicle. The presidency also has its own shield, or coat of arms, which is used on official presidential letterhead and honours.
The presidency's flag is a swallow-tailed flag; that is, it is forked, with a V-shape cut-out from the standard rectangular flag. Where the arms of the cross meet, there is a white rectangle containing the Icelandic coat of arms and four traditional protectors of Iceland. Use of the presidential flag is determined by the Office of the President, but among other things it is flown at Bessastaðir and at Staðastaður on official flag days.
The coat of arms of the President of Iceland is a shield identical in shape and colour to that of the Icelandic coat of arms: a red cross, outlined in white, against a blue background. At the center of the cross, however, is a white rectangle containing the national coat of arms and the four traditional protectors of Iceland.
