Ásgeir Ásgeirsson

Ásgeir Ásgeirsson was elected president of Iceland on 29 June 1952. He left office in 1968.

The second president of the republic, Ásgeir Ásgeirsson, was born at Kóranes á Mýrum on 13 May 1894 and died on 15 September 1972. He was married to Dóra Þórhallsdóttir (1893-1964) and they had three children: Þórhallur, Vala and Björg.
Ásgeir completed his upper secondary education in 1912 and graduated from the University of Iceland with a degree in theology three years later. In subsequent years, he furthered his education at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Uppsala.
Ásgeir’s work experience included stints as a bishop’s secretary, an employee of Landsbankinn Bank, an instructor at the Teachers’ College and director of the bank Útvegsbanki Íslands. He served in Parliament from 1923 to 1952, primarily representing the Progressive Party and the Social Democratic Party.
Ásgeir served four terms as president. He was re-elected without opposition in 1956, 1960 and 1964.
