Guðni Th. Jóhannesson

Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, a historian, was elected president on 25 June 2016. He left office in 2024.

The sixth president of the republic, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, was born in Reykjavík on 26 June 1968. He is married to Eliza Reid (b. 1976). Their children are Duncan Tindur, Donald Gunnar, Sæþór Peter and Edda Margrét. Guðni also has a daughter, Rut, from his first marriage to Elín Haraldsdóttir.
Guðni graduated from upper secondary school in 1987 and completed a BA in history and political science from the University of Warwick in England four years later. He earned an MA in history from the University of Iceland in 1997, an MSt in history from the University of Oxford in England two years later and a PhD in history from Queen Mary University of London in 2003.
Guðni worked in the news room of the national radio broadcaster and as a part-time instructor at the University of Iceland, Bifröst University and University of London before being hired as a lecturer at Reykjavík University in 2007. From 2013, he served as a lecturer, then a reader, and finally a full professor of history at the University of Iceland.
Guðni served two terms as president. He won re-election in 2020.
