Artificial Intelligence for the Greater Good

The President is initiating a dialogue on the societal impact of AI.

The group that met at Bessastaðir to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence.

The President convened a meeting at Bessastaðir with a range of experts to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on social development, as well as the opportunities and risks associated with its rapid advancement. The President has addressed this issue publicly in recent months and, earlier this month, published a newspaper article highlighting its growing urgency:
“The issue is particularly pressing considering the upcoming local elections in May and the national vote in August on whether Iceland should continue accession talks with the European Union. These are critical political moments that require an informed, balanced, and honest debate. As voters, we must be aware of the potential misuse of modern technology to interfere with democratic processes and shape public opinion, and as a society, we must put in place an effective framework to prevent such interference.”
Among the issues discussed at Bessastaðir was the need to develop a clearer and more coherent policy framework in this area. Participants agreed on the importance of initiating a broader national conversation about what kind of society Iceland aims to build in the coming decades. It was underscored that technology must serve the public interest and support this long-term vision, rather than dictate it.
The group agreed to continue discussions on the subject and to promote enhanced cooperation and dialogue in this field going forward.
“Iceland is well placed to be at the forefront of the responsible use of artificial intelligence. With strong foundations in education, high levels of social trust and established democratic traditions, we can shape a future in which technological progress supports wellbeing, creativity, and a healthy society,” the President wrote in her article on AI from April 10.
