The final day of the visit of the presidential couple to the Faroe Islands was yesterday. The program began with a breakfast reception at Tórshavn City Hall, hosted by the city council. Among those present were the Mayor of Tórshavn, Elsa Berg, and members of the Tórshavn city council, together with the presidential couple, the prime ministerial couple, and their entourage.
From there, the group went to Hugskotið, which is an innovation and entrepreneurship center. The presidential couple and the prime ministerial couple met i.e. with Ólavur Ellefsen, founder and CEO of the tech company Usable, which develops AI solutions and has contributed to shaping the Faroe Islands’ AI strategy.
Next, they went to the University of the Faroe Islands. The university’s rector, Martin Tvede Zachariasen, and the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Magni Mohr, welcomed the guests and presented teaching and research projects related to the health and well-being of the Faroese people.
The program of the visit concluded around midday with a reciprocal reception hosted by the presidential couple at the Nordic House in Tórshavn. Among the guests were the prime ministerial couple, Faroese ministers and members of parliament, trade delegations from the two countries, and others who had been involved in the visit’s program. Icelandic refreshments were served, and singer Ragnheiður Gröndal and guitarist Guðmundur Pétursson performed Icelandic music.
The President addressed the guests. She thanked the prime ministerial couple and all the Faroese people for the warm welcome, exceptional hospitality, and precious time spent together. She went on to say:
“I have learned during these past days that the Faroese and the Icelanders have many things in common. We both live on islands in the North Atlantic. We both spend a surprising amount of time discussing the weather and believe that our special combination of land, sea, wind, rain and sunshine is unlike anything the rest of the world, and even we ourselves, can possibly understand. In both our countries, as the Faroese poet Vónbjørt Vang puts it so beautifully, “the landscape is open, awaiting, speaking a language we have yet to learn”. But perhaps the most important thing we share is something deeper. We understand that strong communities do not come about by accident. They are built relationship by relationship, conversation by conversation, generation by generation.”
