The President held a discussion meeting at Bessastaðir with various parties who are concerned with issues affecting young people. The mental well-being of young people in today’s society was discussed, as well as possible ways to address the root of problems and bring about positive change in this area. A proposal was put forward to encourage the public to become “Knights of Love” (Icelandic: "Riddarar kærleikans") and thus respond to the call of the relatives of Bryndís Klara Birgisdóttir to honor her memory by making love the only weapon in Icelandic society.
Bryndís Klara lost her life following a knife attack during Culture Night in Reykjavík. A memorial fund has been established in her name of which the President is a patron. The aim is to support projects that seek to protect children from violence and to strengthen a society where empathy and cooperation are at the forefront.
The President has called for the nation to unite in an effort to tackle the problem at its roots. “Each and every one of us has a role to play. In recent weeks I have had numerous meetings and conversations about the necessary reforms to the system – and fortunately many of them are already on the table! But systemic changes are not enough – we need to work together to make love the only weapon in our society,” the President said in an appeal published on Facebook.
