The Women’s Day Off draws attention

The President of Iceland in an interview with CNN, ARD and The Guardian.

The Women’s Day Off 2025 attracted international attention and was covered in many foreign media outlets last week. Among those who spoke with the President on this occasion were CNN, ARD and The Guardian.
Christiane Amanpour conducted an interview with the President and Pamela Hogan for the American television network CNN. Among other things, they discussed the documentary by Hogan and Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, The Day Iceland Stood Still. In the interview, the President recalled her memories from October 24, 1975, when she was seven years old, and also spoke about how important the election of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir as President of Iceland in 1980 had been for her and her generation.
The German TV station ARD ran an in‑depth news feature on the Women’s Day Off in which Icelandic women of various ages were interviewed. In it, the President pointed out that other nations could learn from the progress Iceland has made on gender equality over the past 50 years. In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian the President, among other things, stressed that although good results had been achieved in the struggle for gender equality in Iceland, setbacks in this field could be seen in many parts of the world.
