Leadership for the future

"Ultimately, leadership is about shared responsibility – towards one another and towards generations yet to come."

Leadership for the future is a central theme in president Halla Tómasdóttir’s dialogue at home and abroad. In times of rapid change, technological transformation, climate challenges and geopolitical uncertainty, leadership requires renewed vision and practices. It calls for courage to address difficult issues, humility to listen and learn and compassion to understand diverse experiences and perspectives.
The president has consistently emphasised that leadership is not limited to those who hold formal positions or titles. It is reflected in responsibility, initiative and a willingness to serve the common good. Future-fit leadership is grounded in trust, transparency and ethical judgement. It involves making decisions that not only respond to immediate pressures but also safeguard the long-term interests of society.
In her engagements with young people, business leaders, academics, civil society and international partners, the president has called for leadership rooted in clear values and an open mind. Such leadership seeks to build bridges rather than barriers, to strengthen solidarity rather than division, and to create the conditions for a sustainable and equitable future.
