The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, met the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella and lunched with him in Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome today.
Sergio Mattarella is a jurist and politician with a long career in constitutional law and public service. After teaching at the University of Palermo, he entered Parliament in 1983, serving until 2008, holding key roles such as Minister for Relations with Parliament, Minister of Education, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defense, overseeing major reforms such as ending conscription and strengthening Italy’s role in international peacekeeping. After serving on high judicial bodies and as a Constitutional Court judge, he was elected the twelfth President of the Italian Republic on 31 January 2015. He is the longest-serving president in the history of the Italian Republic.
The presidents discussed a broad range of topics, including international affairs, energy, and sustainability. They also emphasized the strong bonds of friendship between Iceland and Italy, highlighting the countries’ diverse cooperation in the fields of culture, trade, and politics.
